In 1981, Murdoch purchased The Times, his first British broadsheet, and, in 1985, became a naturalized US citizen, providing up his Australian citizenship, to satisfy the authorized necessity for US television community ownership. Ownership of The Times came to him via his connection with Lord Thomson, who had grown weary of shedding funds on it as a consequence of an extended time period of industrial motion that stopped publication.
