The purple-tailed hawk is the only North American hawk with a rufous tail and a blackish patagium marking on the foremost edge of its wing (which is obscured only on darkish morph adults and Harlan’s hawks by equally dim-coloured feathers). Harlan’s hawks are most related to dark morph tough-legged buzzards and darkish morph ferruginous hawks.
