Though it reads like that ("she retains the hand that retains her down"), "Daughter" is essentially about a kid with dyslexia ("mother reads aloud-baby attempts to realize it"), whose moms and dads do not fully grasp her incapacity and use harsh physical punishment to deal with it ("the shades go down").
