You can avoid marring the finish on the shower head nut by wrapping it with masking tape or cloth before loosening it. Make sure the chrome shower-arm threads are clean and apply a few turns of Teflon tape to the threads of the arm, following the direction of the threads; this should be clockwise. As it turns out, not all pipes fit together like perfect puzzle pieces.
