A substantial component of the plot (and humor) of The Little Hours depends on this trope. It will get me pondering about Stone's individual minor Bernie Spitzer caper. A great deal of what Nixon's henchmen had been performing was "ineffective and reasonably silly. Typical of the mentality of the Nixon individuals who were being about to beat McGovern by 20 factors." It goes against Stone's beliefs to do dangerous matters for no purpose.
