The First Punic War started in 264 BC, when the town of Messana requested for Carthage's support in their conflicts with Hiero II of Syracuse. Rome entered this war simply because Syracuse and Messana have been much too close to the newly conquered Greek towns of Southern Italy and Carthage was now capable to make an offensive by way of Roman territory together with this, Rome could prolong its area more than Sicily.
