It is the second most populous metropolis in the Central-West Region, only surpassed by the country's money Brasília, situated about 200 kilometers (120 miles) from Goiânia. At the centre of the metropolis is the Marienplatz - a substantial open sq. named right after the Mariensäule, a Marian column in its centre - with the Old and the New Town Hall.
