Before Decius they had been shielded by Roman law in holding home and the subterranean cemeteries of Rome, covering sizeable regions, ended up their acknowledged residence from the time of Pope Zephyrinus (202-219): it was an innovation when Decius tracked down Christians even in their cemeteries and seized their property.
