Though it reads like that ("she retains the hand that holds her down"), "Daughter" is really about a child with dyslexia ("mother reads aloud-boy or girl tries to comprehend it"), whose mom and dad you should not have an understanding of her incapacity and use harsh actual physical punishment to deal with it ("the shades go down").
