Ōyama also promoted the concept of philanthropy (not a usual aspect of aristocratic Japanese lifestyle) to high-position Japanese ladies. She was Director of the Ladies Relief Association and the Ladies Volunteer Nursing Association, President of the Ladies Patriotic Association, and Chairman of the Japanese Red Cross Society. She also advocated for women's training and encouraged higher-class Japanese gals to volunteer as nurses.
