The 1st documentary evidence of the phrase "United States of America" dates from a January 2, 1776 letter created by Stephen Moylan to Joseph Reed, George Washington's aide-de-camp. A celebrated early switch in the war for the Americans was George Washington leading the charge to cross the frozen Delaware River in a shock overnight attack on Christmas 1775.
