His essay initiated what Dan Wakefield, in his memoir of New York in the fifties, referred to as "the Great Orgasm Debate", which raged "not only in the internet pages of Dissent but in beds all around New York". In a subsequent difficulty of Dissent the writer Ned Polsky argued that hipsters were "so narcissistic that inevitably their orgasms are premature and puny".
