Though the pilot chapter has protagonist Taro horrified by what he is accomplished with the notebook, the ending leaves his genuine motivations ambiguous as he pulls off a clever gambit to continue to keep his own Death Note even though destroying a different a person that landed in the lap of his noticeably much less stable buddy. Misa, however, finds him to start with and leaves in advance of he can see her.
