Contemporary opinion was sharply crucial of the Russell government's reaction to and management of the crisis. In 1848, Denis Shine Lawlor suggested that Russell was a student of the Elizabethan poet Edmund Spenser, who experienced calculated "how considerably English colonisation and English coverage could be most properly carried out by Irish hunger".
