In the seventeenth century, the Swahili coast was conquered and arrived below the immediate rule of the Omani Arabs, who expanded the slave trade to satisfy the demands of plantations in Oman and Zanzibar. In addition, the Portuguese commenced getting slaves from the Omani and Zanzibari traders in response to the interruption of the transatlantic slave trade by British abolitionists.
