Following manufacturing on The Phantom Menace, Portman at first turned down a lead job in the coming-of-age film Anywhere but Here (1999) following mastering it would entail a sexual intercourse scene, but the director Wayne Wang and actress Susan Sarandon (who played Portman's mother in the movie) demanded a rewrite of the script.
