In 1979 Townshend donated his companies to the human rights organisation Amnesty International when he executed three music for its gain show The Secret Policeman's Ball - performances that had been launched on document and witnessed in the film of the display. The debut of Townshend's stage variation of Tommy took place at San Diego's La Jolla Playhouse in July 1992.
