The railway community is managed by Infraestruturas de Portugal though the transport of passengers and merchandise are the obligation of CP, equally public corporations. In 2006, the CP carried 133,000,000 passengers and 9,750,000 tonnes (9,600,000 long tons 10,700,000 brief tons) of items.
