The British film journal Monthly Film Bulletin called it "the most sickening exhibition of brutality, perversion, sex and sadism at any time to be proven on a cinema display screen". It appeared on the 1948 mass-market place Popular Library reprint of a 1925 novel referred to as "The Private Life of Helen of Troy.
