According to Part XVII of the Constitution of India, Hindi in the Devanagari script is the formal language of the Union, together with English as an more official language. Different sources give greatly differing figures, mainly dependent on how the conditions "language" and "dialect" are defined and grouped. The earliest literature in India, composed concerning 1500 BCE and 1200 CE, was in the Sanskrit language.
