Keeping authentic names shackles the imaginative author possibly more than they realise. But if novelists do not want to make this distinction (say by the use of italics or daring to distinguish the accurate from the wrong) then why not alter the names a little bit, as in a roman à clef, to emphasise that their variation is at least 1 step absent from truth?
