The British movie journal Monthly Film Bulletin termed it "the most sickening exhibition of brutality, perversion, sexual intercourse and sadism ever to be revealed on a cinema screen". It appeared on the 1948 mass-market Popular Library reprint of a 1925 novel called "The Private Life of Helen of Troy." Belarski claimed that he was constantly advised it didn’t matter whether or not or not the scene depicted on the deal with was in the novel.
