The railway network is managed by Infraestruturas de Portugal although the transport of passengers and merchandise are the responsibility of CP, the two community providers. In 2006, the CP carried 133,000,000 travellers and 9,750,000 tonnes (9,600,000 very long tons 10,700,000 brief tons) of items.
