Cinematographer Lachlan Milne’s sweeping, colourful panoramas and a chapter-dependent narrative structure gives Hunt for the Wilderpeople the sense of a storybook fable, but many thanks to the heat-hearted dynamic between Ricky and Hec (Sam Neill), even the film’s most whimsical moments have a feeling of true underlying discomfort: Both of these figures are outsiders eventually seeking for a home to connect with their very own.
