In 1935, the Bureau of Investigation was renamed the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The FBI investigated rings of German saboteurs and spies setting up in the late 1930s, and had primary duty for counter-espionage. In the early 1930s, felony gangs carried out large numbers of financial institution robberies in the Midwest.
