The larva is mostly motionless and is fed and cared for by workers. Ants establish by comprehensive metamorphosis with the larva stages passing by a pupal phase just before rising as an adult. Only reproductive ants (queens and males) have wings. Queens get rid of their wings immediately after the nuptial flight, leaving obvious stubs, a distinguishing aspect of queens.
