The Horus Heresy was kicked off when Horus came to the faulty conclusion (motivated by the words of his by now corrupted brother Lorgar and a deceptive vision of the future) that the Emperor was preparing to do the similar detail to the Primarchs and the Space Marines as soon as the Great Crusade was total. The Emperor had the Thunder Warriors purged soon after they helped him choose above Earth.
