She studied Indonesian society intensely for various months and joined a community dance company throughout that time. She sought escape from her situations by finding out the neighborhood society. In correspondence to her relations in the Netherlands in 1897, she revealed her artistic identify of Mata Hari, the phrase for "sunlight" in the area Malay language (pretty much, "eye of the day").
