On 21 October 2019, 31 unionist MLAs signed a petition to reconvene the Northern Ireland Assembly to move laws to continue to keep abortion unlawful. Two couples, Grainne Close and Shannon Sickles and Chris and Henry Flanagan-Kanem, introduced the case professing that Northern Ireland's prohibition on similar-intercourse marriage breached their human rights.
