Lord George Murray, just one of the Jacobite commanders, afterwards claimed that the simple, open flatness of the battlefield inordinately favored the English cavalry and artillery though proving unsuitable for the Highlanders. Thus, when they achieved with the constant platoon volleys of the Royals and Pulteneys regiments, their progress was checked and they were being forced to withdraw by the motion of the enemy cavalry.
