While these persons do aid the audience recognize what is actually going on with their tunes (so doing their job as a refrain), there's very little in the script to recommend that they really do something associated to the trades of the bit figures they supposedly signify. Aside from the player figures it looks to involve theft, murder, slavery, and the odd bit of genocide.
