In 1960, Mailer wrote "Superman Comes to the Supermarket" for Esquire magazine, an account of the emergence of John F. Kennedy in the course of the Democratic Party conference. The essay was an important breakthrough for the New Journalism of the sixties, but when the magazine's editors adjusted the title to "Superman Comes to the Supermart", Mailer was enraged, and would not write for Esquire for several years.
