Arguably the second-ideal cinematic Clive Barker adaptation (Hellraiser becoming best banana), Bernard Rose's supernatural thriller stars Virginia Madsen as a scholar who discovers a folk legend, about an undead evil with a hook for a hand (Tony Todd), is all far too serious.
