Exit polls identified only 42% of those Catholics and considerably less than a 3rd of Protestant evangelicals realized Santorum was Catholic. Santorum's emphasis on his "Christian roots" was particularly favored by evangelicals in the Midwest and Southern states through the 2012 primaries, though he shed the Republican Catholic vote in most states to Romney.
