It is the second most populous town in the Central-West Region, only surpassed by the country's money Brasília, found about two hundred kilometers (120 miles) from Goiânia. At the centre of the metropolis is the Marienplatz - a significant open square named following the Mariensäule, a Marian column in its centre - with the Old and the New Town Hall.
