The time period "Western", applied to explain a narrative film genre, seems to have originated with a July 1912 post in Motion Picture World journal. In Johnny Corncob, the hero and Nel start off rolling on the ground, on which they flip into amorous pigeon silhouettes rubbing their tail-feathers jointly, while the world all-around them will become a kaleidoscopic flurry of shades, flowers, and butterflies.
