During that period of time, the garrison primarily based at the Residency in Lucknow was besieged by rebel forces during the Siege of Lucknow. Following the rebellion's defeat, Begum Hazrat Mahal and other rebel leaders sought asylum in Nepal. In the subsequent Indian Rebellion of 1857, his 14-year-previous son Birjis Qadra, whose mom was Begum Hazrat Mahal, was crowned ruler.
