Kubrick called Chapter 21 "an excess chapter" and claimed that he had not go through the unique version until finally he had pretty much concluded the screenplay and that he had in no way supplied serious consideration to applying it. In Kubrick's feeling - as in the viewpoint of other readers, together with the initial American editor - the remaining chapter was unconvincing and inconsistent with the guide.
