Most Icelanders are descendants of Norse and Gaelic settlers. The Icelandic Commonwealth lasted till the 13th century when the political process devised by the primary settlers proved unable to cope with the expanding electric power of Icelandic chieftains. Snap elections in October 2017 brought to electricity a new coalition consisting of the Independence Party, the Progressive Party and the Left-Green Movement, headed by Katrín Jakobsdóttir.
