In 1960, Mailer wrote "Superman Comes to the Supermarket" for Esquire magazine, an account of the emergence of John F. Kennedy in the course of the Democratic Party convention. The essay was an essential breakthrough for the New Journalism of the 1960s, but when the magazine's editors modified the title to "Superman Comes to the Supermart", Mailer was enraged, and would not generate for Esquire for yrs.
